Before the building became a restaurant it was a factory run by The London Instrument Company and owned by Henry Rottenburg. Widely acknowledged as an outstanding engineer, Rottenburg is credited with developing the prototype for the modern starting blocks used by sprinters which first appeared at the London Olympics in 1948.
